The new Nokia ‘crown jewel’ N96 preview
N95 is about to be retired soon. Presented for the first time in February at the Mobile World Congress, the N96 features list and photos have ‘leaked’ recently on the Nokia site, revealing major improvements regarding not only the design but also the Smartphone functionality.
Nokia N96 is about to launch in the UK, the launch date is expected to be August 2008.
At first glance, Nokia N96 has lost some weight and measures a few less millimeters as compared to N95. The complete slimmer redesign of the notorious dual-slide is now much more appealing and very similar with the sleek N82, ending the era of the chunky multimedia computers.
The big improvement for the photo enthusiasts is the Xenon flash that turns N96 into a genuine digital camera. It seems that the Xenon flash will become standard for the Nokia phones, similar with the 5 megapixels camera with Carl Zeiss optics that is a N series resident.
Accordingly to this Nokia N96 review, a subject for improvement was also the QVGA display that is now slightly bigger, measuring 2.8 Inches. It looks we`ll see more on it since the N96 has a DVB-H digital TV Tunner and also the onboard GPS module in conjunction with the Nokia maps 2.0 software version allows receiving more accurate satellite map images. The geo-tagging function is also present and least, but not last, the battery life has significantly grown. The innovations list does not stop here: the N96 users shall benefit of 16GB memory (memory can be expanded with an extra 8Gb microSD card) and 3G with HSDPA support is also present to allow fast data transfer speeds for social networking applications.
Using the Symbian S60 3.2 platform with Feature Pack 2, N96 is faster in operation and responsiveness. To the overall ergonomics, the tweaked soft keys and the newly introduced central D-pad contribute significantly. The conclusion is that N96 takes one step further the Nokia multimedia computes, based on the ‘industrial’ milestone N95 concept, but revealing major upgrades for the present N series models.
