Nokia E61i

Although we had some trouble determining if this is a Nokia or a Blackberry phone, it looks like Nokia has pushed the limits of the “E” series SmartPhones and came up with a full QWERTY, e-mail and messaging phone. We must admit that the gray aluminum finish of the sturdy E61 is of high quality as well as the 2.8-inch landscape display. The keyboard is comfortable in size and the keys are well shaped. Another blackberry-like feature is the e-mail alert LED which sits just above the screen.

The major shortcoming of Nokia E61 was the absence of the phone camera. Nokia E61i clearly addresses this issue with the 2 megapixels camera, however the camera quality is optimistically speaking, medium. The camera lacks autofocus and the snapshots can not be compared to the Sony Ericcson CyberShot camera module. If you are interested in a business SmartPhone focused on Internet, email or messenger; E61i is the one.

Tech-talks

The keyboard layout is vital, so E61i it has suffered a redesign, meaning that the keys are a bit smaller and the spaces between them have increased, improving the ergonomics. Also E61i casing looks more solid and less “plasticky”. The software platform is the same used for the Nokia “E” models: Symbian 9.1 v3.0 UI, maybe a little out of fashion when it comes to graphics; but quite fast and reliable.

Connectivity and web browsing are the keywords when it comes to Nokia E61 and E61i, the only absent data transfer mode is HSDPA. The web browser is also excellent (Opera ca also be installed) and the SIP compatibility for VoIP via Wi-Fi is also most welcomed. The extra 50 Eur differentiating the 2 models E61 and E61i are worth it. You will also benefit from an improved autonomy (9 hours of talk time and up to 16 days in stand-by), similar to Sony-Ericsson phones: the average is 6 days of use in normal conditions: talk time, audio, video, web.
