Nokia N80

Introduced in Q4 2005, Nokia N80 Smartphone started the second wave of Nokia N`series starting some big waves along the way. At first glance, N80`s slide up design is both attractive and compact, a bit chunky perhaps. The N80 block shape with rounded edges offer a comfortable hold, the phones fits nice in the palm of the hand. Neither small nor light the
N80 feels appropriate considering the features crammed inside.

The slide mechanism is nowhere near as good as the Samsung smooth sliders but the most annoying thing is that N80 will not stay closed and it opens by itself when carried in a pocket because the spring mechanism can not hold the slider open or closed. Adding the necessity to lock the keypad manually, the probability that the phone will dial on tis own is high. The d-pad lacks a separate center select button and pressing the entire d-pad could end up in a different action. Considering that N80 s aimed at the very high class business segment with bunch of features and extras, the d-pad is a shortcoming for the menu navigation.

Tech-talks

Using Symbian 9.1 OS with the 3rd Series 60 User Interface, N80 benefits from a wide range of advanced software: 802.11g WiFi support(WLAN), a SIP compatible VOIP client, quad-band GSM and 3G UMTS. N80 was highly anticipated considering that it was launched after N90, unfortunately N80 fails to live up to expectations. Expected to be the the most advanced Smartphone released for year 2006 N80 turned out to be unstable, incorporating numerous software bugs and unreliable. Future firmware upgrades have not addressed these problems.

The N80 crisp and sharp display is its strong point. With a 352 x416 pixels resolution and boasting up to 256k colors, the TFT is one of the best displays even for 2007. Nokia N80 is also the first phone to break the 3 megapixel camera barrier unfortunately it disappoints in this respect too. Featuring a LED flash and macro mode the N80 camera is obsolete when compared to the Sony Ericsson 2 megapixel counterparts. Considering the N80 price has not dropped significantly, around £300 (550$), we can`t give it a high rating.
