Nokia introduced N97 on Tuesday last week, during the Nokia World 2008 conference in Barcelona, Spain. Nokia’s new N97 will compete with Sony Ericsson’s X1, HTC’s Touch Pro, Apple’s iPhone 3G, T-Mobile’s G1 and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Storm, although by the time the device is released, the other rivals would have surfaced. Nokia say that the N97 should be available during the first half of 2009 for around €550 before tax and subsidy, in what appear to be white and black color schemes.

The design is impressive due to the slide-out QWERTY keyboard with good spacing between the keys, and the 3.5-inch touch screen. Besides, the slider mechanism now angles the screen and keyboard slightly to make the N97 easier to use. It has a web browser that supports streaming Flash videos and enables access to several social networking websites. Moreover, N97 brings forth a tool called “social location,” which by using the integrated A-GPS sensors and electronic compass, is able to update users’ social networks or to allow them to share their location through photos or videos.
To those who love to take pictures, N97 offers a five-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and dual-LED flash. Video capture resolution is 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second. Recorded video clips can be played back using the N97’s TV-out port. The company also offers a 32GB of onboard memory, with the possibility of expanding it with a 16GB microSD card, a music and a video player.

In other words, the newest touchscreen N97 has everything you may expect from a top mobile phone. Specialists say that it will knock out the rivals on the market and that it could even replace laptops. But this remains to be seen next year.
