This past January at the Consumer Electronics Show, the company rolled out a brand new smart phone with a brand new operating system. And people went crazy. Now, an anonymous source has let slip that O2 managers have been informed that the Palm Pre will be launching in the UK on the 30th October. Although it’s still a rumour at this stage, according to knowyourmobile.com, “early indications suggest it’s one that we can believe in”. there’s no word on price though.
The Palm Pre has long been touted as a true rival to the iPhone, or, as many people call it, “the iPhone Killer” and as a last chance saloon for Palm by others, but some responses to the device in the US, where the Pre has already been released, have been a little muted. Also, the reviews aren’t many. The guys from engadget.com are pretty impressed by the device, while mydigitalfc.com describes the handset as “iPhone, remixed.”T he Pre’s screen is a 3.1-inch diagonal, smaller than the iPhone’s 3.5-inch display, but the two share the same resolution: 320 by 480 pixels. There are also a series of articles that say the Pre won’t be the successful device that everyone expects it to be; on the contrary, it has great chances to fail.

Even so, nobody can deny its good looking design, the webOS platform, its camera, and other features. The smartphone features a vibrant display with multitouch functionality as well as a solid Web browser and good multimedia integration. The Pre offered good call quality and wireless options include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Besides, the Palm Pre offers gadget lovers and consumers well-integrated features and unparalled multitasking capabilities. In general, the Pre feels pretty good in the hand in this retracted mode, though its use is limited, since any text entry requires you to slide out the keyboard.
However, it’s true, not all is perfect: the Pre’s keyboard is cramped. Battery life drains quickly and the smartphone can be sluggish at times. Lacks expansion slot, video-recording capabilities, onscreen keyboard, and Flash support. The Pre App Catalog is still in beta with a limited number of titles.
But above all, “the Pre is more than meets the eye, though it doesn’t do anything as drastic as transform from a plane into a giant robot”, as the guys from macworld.com said.
