The call of Everest
In case you ever wondered if you could use your mobile phone on top of mount Everest, you should know the answer is YES. Rod Baber, a climber from UK, initiated a phone call using a MOTORIZR Z8 from the highest mountain in the wold to demonstrate how innovative mobile technology breaks down the boundaries of communication. Actually he made 2 phone calls: the first one to activate a voice mail box and the second one to his wife and kids.
Sponsored by Motorola, the daring mountaineer secured a world record not only for the highest mobile phone call but also for the highest text message. His SMS to Motorola: “A small text for mankind, a giant step for the mobiles world - Thank you Motorola”.
The call was made possible due to a Chinese mobile station in his range. Officially the calls were made from an altitude of 8848 meters and a temperature of -30 degrees Celsius - so cold that Rob had to attach the batteries to his body so that he could make use of them.
