After throwing on the market one of the first 8 Megapixel camera phones, Samsung iNNOV8, the Korean company thought about those that are in the habit of making “technological” gifts and just in time for Christmas, has released on the market the rival of all camera-phone – Samsung Pixon M8800.
Its first reviews said that Pixon has been dubbed as a camera with a phone attached, rather than just a humble camera-phone. In fact, the pre-market name for the Samsung Pixon M8800 was the Samsung Bresson, rumored to be associated with Henri Cartier-Bresson, a French photographer considered the father of modern photojournalism.
However, what do we know about the Samsung Pixon M8800? At first glance, Samsung Pixon strongly resembles LG’s Viewty and Prada but Pixon is much slimmer than Viewty, and has a more generous display. For instance, Pixon is 15.5mm thick while Nokia N96 is 18mm, Sony C905 18.5mm and its predecessor, Samsung Innov8 is 17.2mm.
On the right side of the phone are two control keys for volume and zooming level when accessing the camera interface, and a dedicated Gallery key. The left side includes the microSD port, Shortcuts key (opens a small menu with most accessed functions) and the Hold key (locks/unlocks the touchscreen). On the bottom right of the phone, there’s an eyelet that should help users keep the stylus that comes with the device. There are only three keys below the large screen: the Accept/Reject call keys and a rounded button that functions as a Back (not Home) key. Above the display, there’s a small secondary camera for video-calls, an ambient light sensor and the earpiece.
The Pixon is an 8.0-megapixel touch-screen mobile phone with autofocus Dual Power LED flash ASR (Advance Shake Reduction) and WDR (Wide Dynamic Range). The 3.2 inch 16 million pixel color display shows excellent photos, it also supports and runs full HD TV viewing. There’s a great new feature called ‘home’ on your screen you’ll have links to CNN news and sport reports accurate weather updates and Google search & map functions all via the built-in 3G Connectivity. This really is a central hub of communication for staying in-touch with the world around you.
For those that prefer their pictures moving, the Pixon can also record 30fps video at 720×480 resolution as well as 120fps slow-motion video at 320×240 resolution plus it offers face detection smile shot face link (face tagging) and photo memo. Yet, do not bother to make night pictures, unless you are really close to the subject.
The Samsung M8800 Pixon is well connected, with quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) support and 2100MHz 3G HSDPA data support for super-fast downloads. The Pixon measures 107.9mm x 54.6mm x 13.8mm (4.2″ x 2.1″ x .5″) in size and includes an accelerometer, which should make perusing through your photos a pleasant experience.

Additional ‘extras’ to this touch screen marvel include Bluetooth, an FM radio, as well as GPS support, which can be used for photo geo-tagging. The Pixon has 200MB of internal storage space and supports microSD expansion cards for even more room. The Pixon’s 1000mAh battery is claimed to power the phone for 3 hours and 40 minutes of talk time, or up to 12 days of standby time.
Over all, Samsung Pixon M8800 is a far cry from many handsets on the market. Regardless of your entertainment demands, the Pixon M8800 is capable of occupying any preferences with the highest of competences. Now photography in a mobile phone has been elevated up to the penthouse!
